Imagine a home renovation project that takes 30 months to complete.

That’s what Mark Bunting and his wife Kelly took on in 2005 when they installed an underground level below the nearly century-old home they own in Highland Park. They’re now interested in selling the Beverly Drive mansion designed by architect Hal Thomson, listing it for nearly $10 million.

Listing agent Allie Beth Allman said the added underground level isn’t a basement because it’s full of natural light and windows. But it does sit beneath the home and backyard pool.

Bunting said he and his wife “fell in love” with the home, even though it was in desperate need of a redo. And when they started renovating, they wanted to keep it true to the original intent.

“It was truly a labor of love,” he said.

Bunting said he and his family would consider renovating another historic home. But he also hopes the next owners of 3601 Beverly Drive appreciate its elegant design and historical significance. It still has historic details like the original wood carvings by woodcarver Peter Mansbendel, who is known for his work on the Mansion on Turtle Creek.

The home is 12,834 square feet with six bedrooms, five bathrooms and three half-bathrooms. The primary suite is on the second floor, with wood beams across the ceiling and a large en suite bathroom. Four more bedrooms are on the second level of the home, and the sixth and final bedroom is part of the underground level.

The home has detailed woodworking throughout, such as on and above the doors in various living rooms. There is a wood-paneled library that’s two stories tall with built-in bookshelves, a spiraling staircase in one corner and a fireplace. The second level of the library wraps around the exterior of the room.

The below-ground addition includes a wine room with a dining area, a bar and entertainment area, a media room and a gymnasium, and an outdoor courtyard that’s accessible from a set of lower level stairs.

There’s a pool in the manicured backyard, and the home has a three-car garage and a two-car antique carport over the driveway.

3601 Beverly Drive is listed for $9,995,000 by Allie Beth Allman.
