VALLEYWIDE (3TV/CBS 5) – Hiking with your dog is fun for both of you, but it can be rough on your dog’s feet, especially during the brutal heat of the summer. Tempe-based Fulton Homes and local radio station 100.7 KSLX are teaming up to help you protect your pup’s paw pads by giving out a free set of dog booties.

The awareness campaign is called Cause for Paws, and it’s taking place on eight days this summer at locations throughout the Phoenix metro area. Each event will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Families can pick up booties made by Pawz Dog Boots while supplies last.

When it comes to hiking with your dog during the searing Arizona summer, or even just walking on asphalt or concrete, the general rule of paw is if a surface is too hot for you to touch for 10 seconds, it’s definitely too hot for your dog.

Tips to hike with your dog safely

Because most surfaces we walk on absorb heat during the day, they’re significantly hotter than the outside temperature. Your dog’s paws are sensitive and, like your own feet, can burn quickly. Severe burns can cause permanent damage.

Even with paw protection, it’s illegal to take your dog out on Phoenix trails when the mercury climbs above 100.

Cause for Paws is not only about awareness and education, but it also is a fundraiser for the Arizona Humane Society. While donations are encouraged, they’re not required.

“Dogs are part of the family, and we are dedicated to helping keep them safe this summer,” said Fulton Homes CEO Doug Fulton. “The campaign aims to inform pet owners of the dangers of walking their pets on scorching concrete, asphalt or other surfaces during our Arizona summers.”

There’s a bonus that comes with getting your dog booties. Watching them get used to weird things on their paws probably will be entertaining. (Just search “dogs in boots funny” on YouTube for proof.) That said, we’d love to see your dog modeling their new shoes. Tweet us @azfamily with the hashtag #dogsinboots.
