Luxury British brand, Adina Reay was founded in 2013, with the aim to offer lingerie for the fuller bust that ticks all the boxes —flattering, comfortable, and well made using high-quality fabrics, while also being stylish and sexy.
Catering for sizes from 28DD to 38G is no mean feat, and its founder, Sharon Lake has applied this design ethos to her debut swimwear line. Here, expect a small but perfectly formed line of statement one-pieces, complete with supportive deep-v necklines, oversized bows, and ruffles, as well as coordinating bikinis with mesh and cutouts, in a color palette of classic black, red, hot pink and turquoise. Hello, summer.
Lake tells us more about her first foray into the swimwear market.
Felicity Carter: Tell us about the collection?
Sharon Lake: The Adina Reay Swimwear collection includes four very different collections, all designed especially for sizes 28DD to 38G and offering both bikinis and one-piece styles:
- The Capri collection offers an exposed wire detail and a plunging neckline that is so flattering for fuller busts. Large bows on the shoulder draw the eye upward and balance body proportions beautifully.
- The Santorini Swimsuit is an elegant statement maker, with a deep ruffle running draping stylishly from the shoulder. The leg line of this suit has been carefully studied to create the most flattering fit on every body shape .
- The Antigua collection has a peplum belt detail that kicks out the hip area for a perfect hourglass silhouette.
- Finally, the Malibu collection mixes open meshwork with opaque panels cut to create the illusion of great curves and offers just a little glimpse of skin.
FC: How long has the line been in the making?
SL: We started working on this collection over three years ago. This long development period has allowed us to bring new Swimwear silhouettes, giving our customers the excitement they’ve come to know and love in our lingerie but with all the support needed to fit up to 38G. We systematically addressed the frustrations women experience with Swimwear: opacity, unflattering around the bum, lack of tummy support (or – just as bad – too restrictive tummy support), needing to be a certain age or shape to suit the style. It is these considered details that make this collection stand out for us.
FC: How would you sum up the aesthetic of the collection?
SL: Our DD to G Swimwear is a timeless capsule of noticeably chic and stylish pieces that just happen to make whatever shape you have look just that little bit better. As an entirely female business, our goal with this collection was to create pieces that would actually be enjoyable to wear and look amazing on everyone.
FC: Who is your customer?
SL: Adina Reay Swimwear is designed specifically to fit and flatter fuller cup sizes: we go from 28DD to 38G. Our customers love that with Adina Reay they can finally wear striking silhouettes, knowing that the support they need is built in but not the main focus. Because we are experts in flattering female curves they love how the cut of our suits brings out the best in their body shape. The garment works for them, not the other way round!
FC: What is the production process?
SL: We are proudly British-made. We have recently been able to set up a production process that allows us to make just the quantities needed, avoiding the waste associated with over-production. This is the opposite of fast fashion and one that allows us to focus on long-lasting design as opposed to trends
FC: What’s your personal favorite and why?
SL: We love the drama of the Santorini Swimsuit, and it sums up perfectly what Adina Reay is all about: easy, throw-on elegance with support in all the right places!
