Barb’s Basement Boutique, a women’s clothing and accessories shop, will open as a “pop-up” store by the mall’s food court, starting at noon on Wednesday, April 7.
Barb Schramm got it into her head to move her boutique from her basement to an empty store space while getting a haircut at Mane Impressions at the mall.
She thought the closing of the mall’s Christopher & Banks store presented an opportunity, “because I do have a lot of customers.”
Success at the recent Spring Variety Market cemented the decision.
“That was a big success for me. It said, yes there is a need and people still want to shop in Moorhead, and I think that’s great,” Schramm said.
Schramm started The 3 Bees in 2014 after retiring from full-time teaching at Concordia College. “The Queen Bee” operated the store in the basement of her home at 3211 Rivershore Drive.
Schramm has devoted much of her life to music, starting as a choral conductor, then moving on to singing opera, including a 20-year stretch in Germany, (“I brought my husband back as my souvenir.). She then started teaching voice in 2007 at Concordia and also did some part-time work with music majors at Minnesota State University Moorhead. The 3 Bees helps fill the “retirement” phase of her life.
The Moorhead native has had a longtime love of textiles and color. The 3 Bees allows her to share her passion for shoes, clothes, jewelry and other accessories from Germany, Italy and France.

“When I first got to (Moorhead), I couldn’t find the style of clothes I like. When I got too many (clothes), someone said I should start a boutique.,” she said. “I’m good at putting things together. My customers would tell you that too. They kind of expect me to find what would look good to them.”
The pop-up store won’t be a fancy boutique.
‘It is really my home store in the Moorhead mall,” Schramm said.
The store is just off the center courtyard, across from Jay’s Smokin’ BBQ.
Store hours will be noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
