Stylish New Yorkers hold Easter bonnet parade featuring drag and outfit inspired by artist Kusama

New York City showed why it’s the world’s style capital Sunday as Manhattanites held an achingly-fashionable Easter Bonnet parade.

The event kicked-off close to St Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue at 10am EST, with notable attendees including a handsome bearded man in an elegant peach outfit.

That unidentified parade-goer accessorized his outfit with large strings of pearls and an impressive straw hat replete with large pastel-colored flowers.

Also in attendance was a parade-goer in an astonishing yellow and black outfit designed as a tribute to Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.

The creation included a winged hat, fanned head-piece and cheerful sunflower and appears to have been inspired by a recent smash-hit Kusama exhibition held at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx.

Another woman who attended the parade stuck closely to the Easter theme, wearing an elaborate yellow dress that featured intricate embroidery.

She pushed her pet dog in a wicker pram. A wooden hare was carved onto the front of the four-wheeler, in an apparent nod to the Pagan origins of Easter and spring festivals.

Other dogs got in on the action too, with the cute Frenchie and its fluffy white friend donning brocade outfits and pearls for the annual event, which was held virtually in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID.

Also on display was an impressive ‘bonnet’ designed to look like a bubble-bath, and filled with pink, purple as well as blue plastic balls.

The man wearing it also donned a black turban towel and face mask to ensure he stuck loyally to his theme. Another man was seen wearing a smart suit and puffing a papier-mache carrot that had been designed to look like a cigar.

Others stuck to more low-key looks, many of which included classic Easter themes including pastel-colored eggs, greenery and straw hats.

And multiple outfits highlighted Russia’s ongoing invasion with Ukraine, with two men holding up a banner saying ‘Pray for Ukraine,’ while another woman donned an outfit in the yellow and blue of the war-torn nation’s flag.

Meanwhile, visitors to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC struck a more somber tone as they gathered for a ceremony of worship as the sun rose Sunday morning.

Hundreds of people gathered to pray and sing hymns to mark the day that Jesus Christ is said to have risen from the dead, following his crucifixion on Good Friday.

And while Easter is a Christian holiday, 2022 has marked the first time in 30 years that the event has overlapped with annual celebrations for Muslims and Jews.

Passover began on Friday, while Ramadan started earlier in April, and continues through until the beginning of May.
