Dont Fret debuts a gallery inspired by Wicker Park’s bygone DIY scene

Chicago street artist Dont Fret hopes people feel at home when they visit his Wicker Park gallery space—at least in part because the gallery is located inside Fret’s actual home, an apartment on Damen Avenue filled with vintage furniture and family mementos in addition to the art on the walls.  Inspired by his upbringing amid Wicker Park’s DIY scene as well as time spent living in an artist commune in London, Fret aims to fuse elements of art, food and culture at the half-gallery, half-apartment space, which he’s named Home Away From Home. When it opens to the public on

I don’t even know what this pre-wedding event is

DEAR MISS MANNERS: What, pray tell, is a “pre-wedding toast” event? A longtime, but casual, friend — the father of the bride, whom I have never met — has sent an electronic invitation (about which I will say nothing) to attend “Bride and Groom’s Pre-Wedding Toast.” It is an afternoon event on a certain date at a certain location. That is the entire message in the invitation. No method to RSVP is provided. I will, therefore, respond to the gentleman’s personal email address — while refraining from clicking the tempting “unsubscribe” link within the invitation. Although I am unable to

You Don’t Need a Sexy Halloween Costume to Wear Fishnets

FISHNETS SHOULD SUE Halloween for defamation. At some point after “sexy” Halloween costumes gained currency in the 1970s, the stockings became unfairly associated with too-short polyester getups sold by such questionable clothiers as Party City. Want to be a racy witch? Pull on black webbed tights. A naughty nurse? You’ll need white, thigh-high versions. A sensual skunk? Take your perforated pick. This fall, however, fishnets could transcend their tawdry reputation as cheap All Hallows’ Eve novelties. During a recent runway show, Chanel creative director Virginie Viard teamed wide-gauge fishnets with genteel tweed suits. And 71-year-old Austrian hosiery and bodywear brand

Today’s Tech Founders Don’t Just Own the Company. They’re Also Getting Huge Pay Packages.

Archer Aviation Inc. is years from producing its only planned product, a four-passenger electric air taxi that the main U.S. regulator hasn’t yet certified. It hasn’t generated any revenue. Still, the co-founders of this three-year-old company got a huge payday last month, a $99 million special stock award that stands to quadruple if Archer hits other milestones—thanks to a compensation package they negotiated before it listed publicly on Sept. 17. For years, Silicon Valley was known as a place where leaders often bucked American corporate customs when it came to pay. Rather than receiving large stock grants and salaries, company

Liu Song Aug. 4, 2021 8:31 am ET As the kids know, rules were meant to be broken, and right now the same goes for grown-up fashion. To your delight, you may even find a trend you retired years ago is back in the youthful fashion vernacular. Wearing socks and sandals with a pair of shorts is straight out of your high school yearbook—and your son’s new wardrobe, too. For dads, there’s more common generational ground in menswear

I don’t mean to insult their haphazard clothing

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My friends and I (all male) are old-school when it comes to being seen in public. We might meet for a happy hour, go to the horse races or meet for afternoon tea. We always dress for the occasion. Sport coats and ties in correct weights and colors are the standard attire, unless something else is required — along with correct hats, when warranted. We inevitably get asked if we “just came from a funeral” or if we are “going to a wedding,” but our attire is incorrect for either of those events. Or we are simply
