GREENFIELD — Kamal Clothing, a store selling inexpensive seasonal clothes, opens Friday at 49 Main St.
The owner, Muhammad Hamayun, acknowledged that the thick of a pandemic may be a strange time to start a business, but he noted that locals may also be more interested than usual in finding low-cost clothes without going to a mall.
“This is a time when people need a little business in town that is affordable,” said Hamayun, who also owns Country Mart, the convenience store next door to Kamal Clothing. “That is the whole purpose behind this.”
Almost all clothes at Kamal Clothing will be under $10, Hamayun said.
All inventory available now is summer clothes for women. Hamayun said he may later add some offerings for men.
Masks have to be worn by customers and employees, Hamayun said, like in other retail businesses. There will also be limits on the number of people allowed in the store at once, and hand sanitizer will be available.
“It’s a hard time to start a business,” Hamayun said.
“Kamal” is an Arabic name, meaning “perfection,” Hamayun said. It is also his father’s name.
Hamayun said he moved to Greenfield in 1997 from Virginia to live in a more rural place. He has worked in local retail businesses since then, he said, managing and owning several different chain stores and convenience stores, including Country Mart.
He has also managed some retail stores similar to Kamal Clothing at local malls, most locally in Holyoke, he said.
“Instead of going to the mall, especially at this time, with the virus restrictions,” he said, “people can shop in their own town.”
Kamal Clothing is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
